Beyond Borders: International Living Learning Community
What is a Living Learning Community (LLC)?
As a member of a Living Learning Community at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, students become part of a "community within a community" by living in the residence halls among their peers with similar interests. LLCs are all about connections. As a member of an LLC, students will have access to special resources, programs, and activities that will help connect them to other students, instructors, and campus life. Each LLC has between 20-72 students who live on the same floor and take at least one class together. LLC membership lasts two semesters -both the fall and spring semester of freshman year.
Why the Beyond Borders: International LLC?
The Beyond Borders: International LLC will enable students to understand globalization as a complex process with a wide range of local and global implications. This will be done with an experiential learning approach, engaging students both inside and outside the classroom and fostering a supportive student cohort through organized activities. In the first semester, student will take Global 101: People and Politics. The overall goal of this course is to explore cultural and political relationships within globalization processes that are changing our world today. In addition to exciting in-class experiences students will have the opportunity to engage in co-curricular activities to further support their individual and academic growth as a student. In collaboration with the Center for International Education, Global Studies advisors, faculty, resident assistants and mentors, several fun and educational activities are planned. For example, in the past the LLC arranged for movie nights, a monthly culture-café event, study abroad information session, and lecture and discussion series based on pertinent cultural and political topics.
