Undergraduate

There are three categories of English proficiency at the undergraduate level: Regular admission, dual admission, and conditional admission.

  1. Regular admission: Students admitted in this category are eligible to enroll in full-time academic coursework.  Students are also eligible to enroll in ESL program courses.
  2. Dual admission: Students admitted in this category are required to enroll in the ESL dual admit course. Students are also allowed to register for 6 credits in academic courses. You can demonstrate your language proficiency and move to full time study by completing the dual admit course with a grade of 80% or better or by submitting a TOEFL score or an IELTS score that meets the score range for regular admission.
  3. Conditional admission: Students admitted in this category are required to enroll in UWM's ESL program and are not eligible to register for academic courses until they have met one of the following:
    1. Successful completion of the UWM ESL program: Full-time Intensive English Program students who successfully demonstrate their ability to meet the learning outcomes of the highest IEP level (B2 high) will be considered to have met the English proficiency requirement for admission to undergraduate study.
    2. Submission of a TOEFL score or an IELTS score which meets the English proficiency score range for regular or dual admission.

Graduate

There are three categories of English proficiency at the graduate level: Regular admission and dual admission, and conditional admission.

Please note: The scores on this website are the minimum to be considered for admission.  Individual graduate programs may require higher scores for admission.

  1. Regular admission: Students admitted in this category are eligible to enroll in full-time academic coursework. Students are also eligible to enroll in ESL program courses.
  2. Dual admission (also referred to by the UWM Graduate School as admission with English deficiency): Students admitted in this category are eligible to enroll in six credits of academic coursework and are also required to enroll in an ESL course (credit or non-credit). You must demonstrate your English language proficiency by submitting a TOEFL score or an IELTS score that meets the score range for regular admission within three semesters of initial enrollment at UWM.
  3. Conditional admission: Students admitted in this category are required to enroll in UWM's ESL program and are not eligible to register for academic courses until they have submitted a TOEFL score or an IELTS score that meets the score range for regular admission within three semesters of initial enrollment at UWM.  Not every graduate program considers applicants for conditional admission.  Applicants seeking conditional admission are responsible for contacting the appropriate Graduate Program Representative to ask whether the graduate program considers applicants for conditional admission.
