Undergraduate Transfer Credit from Foreign Institutions

Who Is Eligible for Transfer Credit?

Any undergraduate student who has completed university-level course work at recognized foreign institutions.

What Classes Will Be Considered For Transfer Credit?

• Classes must have been completed at a regionally-accredited or similarly-recognized tertiary/university-level institution in another country.
• Classes must be academic in nature and comparable in depth and breadth to course work offered at U.S. colleges and universities in the bachelor’s degree level.
• Only graded (assessed) classes will be considered for transfer credit.

The following types of classes will not transfer to UWM:

• Classes that are secondary in nature or allow access to tertiary education (advanced level examinations; thirteenth year of secondary education)
• Remedial courses
• Classes that are purely vocational or applied in nature
• Technical or applied courses that are not offered at the university-level in the U.S.
• Military training or physical education
• Graduate- or professional-level courses
• English as a second language courses

What Do You Need To Do?

We strongly recommend that you complete the transfer credit process within your first semester of enrollment.

1. You have already begun the process by providing the International Student and Scholar Services Office (ISSS) with all your required educational documents.  If you have further information, like course descriptions or syllabi, we recommend that you submit it to ISSS as well as to your academic advisor and appropriate faculty.
2. The Transfer Credit Evaluation Form reflects the preliminary evaluation of your courses for departmental elective credit only.  Take this form to your academic advisor who will assist you with determining which courses may apply to your intended degree requirements.
3. After meeting with your academic advisor, you then need to find the appropriate faculty to request signatures for those courses, which may apply to your degree.  Please find directory information for academic departments included with this form.
4. After gathering all the signatures, bring back this completed form to the International Student and Scholar Services Office so that your academic record can be updated.

If you do not pursue equivalencies or return the form, the transfer credit will appear on your record as elective credit only.
