Special Programs - Contemporary Ethnic Issues in the Philippines: Challenges to Filipino Nationhood

The symposium will feature Dr. Hj. Nagasura T. Madale, Filipino Muslim scholar and author, who is on an exchange program at the Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois, and David C. Martinez, author of  "A Country of Our Own: Partitioning the Philippines."  The speakers will explore the issue of Filipino nationhood in relation to the Moro/Muslim minoritys quest for self-governance in southern Philippines, and the question of the legitimacy of a multi-ethnic nation.

Dr. Madale was born in Tuca, Marawi City, Philippines.  He received his Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Mindanao State University, and M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of the Philippines.  Madale has written many books and essays on peace and development.  David Martinez was born in Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, Philippines.  He was educated at the Siliman University law school and joined the Philippine bar in 1970.  Martinez fled from political persecution by the Marcos regime to the United States in 1972 with help by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
