Study Abroad

UWM offers short- and long-term study abroad programs. Short-term programs are usually led by a UWM faculty member and take place in the summer, during the UWinteriM term, or over spring break. Students on short-term programs pay a comprehensive program fee that amounts to an equal share of the total cost of the program, and earn graded UWM credit. Long-term study abroad programs are at least a semester in length. Costs vary by program but consist of a comprehensive fee that covers academic costs and a CIE program fee, and may also cover housing, meals, transportation and activities. Students earn graded UWM credit for courses taken abroad.

Exchange

In an exchange program, a student from UWM and a student at a partner university trade places. As an exchange program participant, UWM students pay UWM tuition and a CIE program fee and become a matriculated guest student at the overseas partner institution. Benefits include low cost (for in-state students), full immersion into the host culture, and a wide range of subjects and courses to choose from. Students earn graded UWM credit for courses taken abroad. Exchange programs are generally a semester or year in length but there are also short-term exchanges. They are restricted to UWM students.

Non-UWM

Students interested in programs that are not part of the UWM education abroad program portfolio are welcome to enroll in an accredited program through another university or provider, but should work through the study abroad office in order to remain registered and receive financial aid. Classes taken on non-UWM sponsored programs appear as transfer credit on participants' transcripts. For further information visit our website on non-UWM program application stepsImportant: Implications of NOT working through the CIE Study Abroad Office.

Independent Internship, Study, or Research

CIE's study abroad office provides advising and emergency support for individual UWM students doing international internships, self-directed research, or other types of credit-bearing or UWM-funded international study. Students pursuing international experiences that are not-for-credit or supported by UWM funds, are encouraged to apply to purchase of International Travel Health Insurance.
