Study Abroad 101

Step 1

Explore the information on this website and create a list of questions as you go.  Apply for a passport.

Step 2

Stop by the CIE study abroad office (Pearse Hall, Room 166).  Examine our program materials and/or talk to one of our peer advisors, a student employee who has previously studied abroad and can answer questions and give general advice on program options.

Step 3

Attend a study abroad information session.  A study abroad coordinator will be on hand to talk about the application and acceptance processes, finances, and credit transfer, plus answer any additional questions you might have.

Step 4

Schedule an appointment (414-229-5182, overseas@uwm.edu) with a study abroad coordinator to discuss specific details related to program(s) of interest.

Step 5

Apply for a program.  Application due dates are on or near March 1 for fall programs, March 15th for summer programs, October 1 for spring programs and October 15th for Winterim programs. Note: some programs may have earlier application deadlines.

Step 6

Prepare for your adventure.  After you are accepted:

  • complete and turn in all necessary confirmation forms by their due date;
  • make an appointment with your physician or the Norris Travel Clinic to get sign-off on your Healthcare Provider form;
  • complete and submit all financial aid forms;
  • attend a mandatory general pre-departure orientation (or complete the D2L orientation quiz);
  • attend a mandatory site-specific orientation; and
  • apply for a visa (if needed).

Step 7

Go!  Adventure and knowledge await.
