About the Center for Industrial Mathematics
Industrial mathematics at UWM has been successful in terms of number of students graduated, with 17 degrees in the past 10 years. This was accomplished with only two specialists in industrial mathematics and several other faculty members of applied math and statistics also advising students. There were 29 projects completed by faculty or students.
The industrial mathematics program faculty created four new graduate courses, Math 601, 602, 701, 702, which previously existed but with significantly different topics. These courses have become popular for science and engineering graduate students and enhance and update the applied mathematics offerings in the Department.
A major international research conference that has a large industrial math component has be created and sponsored through efforts of the CIM director. This contributes to the reputation of the Department and University through establishment of research contacts and exposure through lectures and advertisement of the meeting. Graduate students benefit in their research from participation.
In terms of financial support industrial mathematics has been very successful, having attracted $749,077. In addition, Northwestern Mutual Life has donated a million dollars, $750,000 of this to benefit the actuarial program at UWM. Actuarial science at the graduate level is accomplished at UWM through the Industrial Mathematics program.
