The goals of the program are:
- To improve teaching and learning of science by engaging students in creative, inquiry-based lessons that were inspired and developed by experiences at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Barro Colorado Island
- To develop a workshop to share the materials that are developed as part of the program with other educators
- To make resources available to students, teachers and families on our bilingual website
- To create a network of teachers that is interested in science, current research, and making connections with their students, science process skills, and inquiry in the field of ecology.
The unique qualities of our program include a travel abroad experience, an immersion into the scientific community on one of the most studied areas in the world, and the flexibility for each teacher participant to engage in their own curiosities and interests to develop relationships with several researchers and then develop lessons that will be useful in their own classrooms as well as contribute to the overall goals of the program.
