Pennsylvanian of Kentucky
Delta Depoists
           FRESH WATER VS. MARINE DELTA

FRESH WATER DELTA

  • Equal densities between inflow and basin
  • Rapid deposition of inflowing sediment
  • Distance of deposition deponds on velocity of flow
  • Beds dip at 15°-25°
  • Results in steep downstream accretionary surfaces
  • Coarsening upward sequence

MARINE WATER DELTA

  • Inflow of fresh water will be less dense than the marine  waters (lower salinity)
  • Outflow occurs in a buoyant plume
  • Deposition may occur over large distances
  • Beds will dip at most 10° but usually less than 5°
  • Soft sediment deformation
