MEANDERING STREAM VS. FRESHWATER DELTA

Meandering stream in the field
Meandering Streams:
  • Has Lateral Accreation
  • Structures and grain size tend to fine upwards
  • Lower contact is erosional
  • Paleocurrents have a wide variety of flow directions
  • Bounding surface dips perpendicular to flow direction
  • Confined flow, has a channel

Freshwater Deltas:
  • Downstream Accreation
  • Coarsens upwards and fines outwards
  • Paleocurrents don't vary
  • Bounding surface dips in same direction of flow
  •  Unconfined flow with channel cutting into top of deposit
  • Has topsets, bottomsets and foresets
  • Foresets are high angle, ~10-25°
  • Contacts are gradational or sharp (Except where channel cuts in, erosional
