The Center for Women's Studies, established in 1974 as the Office of Women's Studies, facilitates research and course development about women and gender-related issues, coordinates the interdisciplinary Women's Studies undergraduate and graduate instructional program, and works with local, state, and national groups on issues of importance to women. The Center's instructional program offers both an undergraduate Women's Studies major and minor, as well as a Graduate Certificate through the Graduate School. Currently Women's Studies offers over 100 core and cross-listed courses drawn from over thirty departments on campus, taught by over 90 affiliated faculty and staff members. Approximately 4,000 students enroll in Women's Studies courses each year. The Center encourages and facilitates research for and by women, and provides support services for faculty, including grant proposal development, preparation and administration. To highlight faculty and student research and foster collaboration, the Center also sponsors seminars, lectures, workshops, and sponsors an annual student contest, where cash awards are made for meritorious research and projects.
