ESL Writing Courses for Credit: Course Descriptions

ESL 115: Basic Writing in ESL (ESL-PIC Test Level 1)
Extensive reading and writing to strengthen basic written communication skills in English, with individualized instruction. Students whose writing is strong enough at the end of a semester can qualify to move from ESL 115 to ESL 117, skipping ESL 116. 6 credits

ESL 116: Introduction to College Writing in ESL (ESL-PIC Test Level 2 or grade of C or better in ESL 115).
An introduction to the concepts of academic writing in English, plus individualized language instruction. Students whose writing is strong enough at the end of a semester can qualify to move from ESL 116 to ESL 118, skipping ESL 117. 6 credits

ESL 117: College Writing in ESL (ESL-PIC Test Level 3 or grade of C or better in ESL 116).
A review of the concepts of academic writing in English, as well as an introduction to argumentative writing, plus individualized language instruction. Students whose writing is strong enough at the end of a semester can qualify to move from ESL 117 to English 102, skipping ESL 118. 6 credits

ESL 118: Advanced College Writing in ESL (ESL-PIC Test Level 4 or grade of C or better in ESL 117).
English 101 equivalent. Prepares and qualifies ESL writers for English 102. 3 credits

ESL 120: Grammar and Editing in English as a Second Language (No ESL-PIC score needed).
An excellent optional course for ESL writers at any level. Individualized language instruction. 3 credits

ESL section of English 102: College Writing and Research (EPT level 3 or grade of C or better in ESL 118 or English 101).
College writing with a focus on research-based writing. 3 credits
