Intensive English Program

About 100 students from more than 30 countries and speaking 20 different languages enroll in the UWM Intensive English Program (IEP) each semester. Students enroll in the IEP for a variety of reasons: some are planning to study at UWM and need to improve their English before beginning full time academic study; some are planning to study at other U.S. colleges or universities; some are working to improve their English for professional advancement; some have a personal goal of gaining greater fluency.

Whatever the reason, all are welcome to the UWM campus for intensive study of English.

Admission to UWM from IEP:

No standardized test (TOEFL or IELTS) score is required if a student completes 4 months of Immersion (the most advanced level) with a B- (80%) average.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Intensive English Program is to prepare students to function linguistically and culturally as university undergraduate or graduate students in the United States and to interact with English-speakers in the context of business and professional work. In teaching English to reach proficiency the IEP establishes supportive teacher-student relationships and offers cultural enrichment activities.

The IEP teaches students to use English in a global context; imparts information about life in the United States; heightens awareness of other cultural groups and minorities; and encourages students to reflect on the philosophies and value systems that may underlie their native culture as well as the host culture.

Intensive English Program Goals

Upon completion of 4 months of the most advanced level of study, Immersion, with a B- (80%) or better average, students will:

  • Be able to understand their professors and classmates both in the classroom and socially.
  • Be able to read at the college level, almost at the rate of speed of native readers, and be able to comprehend at least 80% of what they read.
  • Be able to participate in class discussions in understandable English, in socially acceptable ways.
  • Be able to write well-organized essays, with proper spelling, punctuation, and citation of sources.
  • Know what is expected of them as students in a university setting.
  • Have an understanding of study skills and time management.
  • Have culturally appropriate social skills for the U.S. educational environment.
