New Income Based (IBR) Loan Repayment Program
A new income-based repayment (IBR) program went into effect July 1, 2009. This repayment program caps a borrower's monthly payment at 15% of their discretionary income (15% of what a borrower earns above 150% of the poverty level for their family size). Any current or future borrower whose loan payment exceeds 15% of his/her discretionary income is eligible. After 25 years in the program, borrowers' debts will be completely forgiven. Borrowers with hefty debt or low-paying jobs are most likely to qualify for the program. All federal loans are covered (Direct/Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP). This includes Stafford, Grad PLUS and federal consolidation loans. Parent PLUS loans are excluded. Perkins loans consolidated into a FFEL/Direct loan are also eligible.

Beware of Financial Aid / Scholarship Scams
1. Don't pay a fee for financial aid or scholarship information!
2. In one current scam students and parents receive a letter that appears to be from an official
financial aid organization. This letter may include personal information about the student and may
even name the UW-Milwaukee, but it is from a business that UW-Milwaukee does not endorse.
