Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for financial aid a student must:

  1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the appropriate year. This can be done online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.
  2. Be admitted to UWM in a degree granting program or as an eligible special student.
  3. Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
  4. Be enrolled at least half-time, except for PELL grant consideration.
  5. Meet Academic Progress Standards as defined below by the Financial Aid Office.
  6. Not be receiving federal or state financial aid from another institution for the same enrollment period.
  7. Be registered with Selective Service (male students only.)
  8. Not be in default on a student loan.
  9. Not owe a refund on any federal (Title IV) aid.
  10. Not have their eligibility suspended or terminated due to a drug-related conviction.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Students working on a second degree will be evaluated for Federal Perkins and Nursing Loans, Federal Stafford Loans, and Federal Work-Study funds.
  • Graduate students will be evaluated for Federal Perkins and Nursing Loans, Federal Stafford Loans, Grad PLUS Loans and Federal Work-Study funds.
  • Second majors (with prior baccalaureates) are not eligible for grants, loans, or federal work-study.
  • Special Students and non-degree Graduate Students are not eligible for financial aid except in cases explained below.
