Illinois Scholar Program

The Illinois Scholar Program offers an annual award of a $7,500 tuition remission to Illinois high school students who have been admitted to UWM and show exceptional promise in their academic abilities. The award is renewable for up to four years of consecutive full time undergraduate enrollment at UWM, providing renewal criteria are met.

To be eligible for the Illinois Scholar Award, a typical student awarded the ILSA should:
  1. Be a bona fide Illinois resident not eligible for Wisconsin resident status tuition.
  2. Be admitted to UW-Milwaukee (students may apply for the ILSA before admission to UWM is complete, however the ILSA cannot be awarded until admission is assured).
  3. Have earned an ACT composite score of 25 or higher or an SAT I score of 1170 or higher.
  4. Rank in the top 25% of his/her graduating class or the student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale.

Note:
Students who do not meet the ACT/SAT and/or class rank requirements may be considered based on strong demonstrated high school performance, with added emphasis placed on coursework or experience in their chosen area of study.

Files for the ILSA will be reviewed by the Illinois Scholar Award Committee. The Committee will look at the above stated criteria as well as the community and co-curricular involvement of the student and his/her responses to the application questions.

Deadlines:
Students who demonstrate that they meet the criteria as described will automatically receive the Illinois Scholar Award. Furthermore, students applying for this award on or before December 1 and who are interested in living in our residence halls will be guaranteed on-campus housing space. (Note: That this is a space guarantee only.) Applicants are still responsible for the costs incurred in on-campus living.

Illinois Scholar Awards will be made to any qualifying applicant until funding has been exhausted.

Administration Process:
The award is administered in two tuition remission installments of 3,750 each, one of which is applied directly to the fall semester tuition, and the other to the spring term. The award is not designed for application to a summer term.
