To encourage and award the contributions made by University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee students to the development of geographic information science and technology, the GIS Council at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will hold a student GIS project competition on GIS Day, November 18, 2009. All current University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee students are encouraged to participate in this important event.
Graduate and Undergraduate students should submit either:
All competition participants must be students for the academic year 2009-2010 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The project could be a class project, a research project, or an internship project related to geographic information science and technology. For projects resulting from an internship, a letter from a direct supervisor should be provided to verify that the majority work was done by the participant and that the project report was written solely by the participant. Projects that were done in previous years are also eligible to participate in the competition as long as the projects were done at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee AND the participant is a current University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student for academic year 2009-2010. Ph.D. students are required to submit course work or research projects that are not related to their dissertation (Do not submit dissertation materials).
2) Number of Awards and Prizes:
The following awards will be given:
Poster and Paper:
Posters should be no larger than 36 X 54 inches.
The poster should contain, at the minimum, a title, your name and affiliated
department, an introduction, project methods, results, and a conclusion.
The applicant shall make the poster available for exhibition by delivering
the poster (hard copy, NOT digital copy) to Kay Guildner (guildner@uwm.edu) at the
American Geographical Society Library (third floor, east wing, of the
UWM Golda Meir Library) by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, November 13, 2009. Posters can be printed at no cost through Visual Design Services at UWM. Detailed information can be found at https://www4.uwm.edu/uits/services/media/large_format_printing/edtech.cfm.
The paper shall not exceed 6 pages (double spaced, with font size of 12). The applicant shall hand in one hard copy and one digital copy of the paper. The hard copy paper shall be hand-delivered to Professor Changshan Wu in the Department of Geography (Bolton Hall 482) and the digital copy should be e-mailed to Professor Changshan Wu at cswu@uwm.edu by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, November 13, 2009.

of 12). The applicant shall hand in one hard copy and one digital
copy of the paper. The hard copy paper shall be hand-delivered

Entry Form:
All applicants shall
submit a completed entry form by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, November 13, 2009. The

The winners of the competition will be announced during the luncheon of GIS Day Activities (see 5 below).
Five judges will review and evaluate the submitted posters and papers. Based on the evaluation, the award committee will select three projects as winners of the competition.
All posters will be on display at the American Geographical Society Library (the third floor, east wing, of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Golda Meir Library) from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 18, 2009. All competition participants are required to be there at 10:00 a.m. to answer any questions. Participants may be asked to briefly present their projects to the judges. Judges will meet from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and winners of the competition will be announced during the luncheon of GIS Day Activities.
