To encourage and award the contributions made by University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee students to the development of geographic information science and technology, the GIS Council at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee initiated an annual student GIS project competition in Spring 2003. The criteria used were as follows:
1. The project makes
significant contribution to advance new theories and methods of Geographic Information
Science and Technology.
2. The project demonstrates excellence and innovation in applying theories and
methods of Geographic Information Science and Technology.
3. The project shows high quality of presentation in terms of graphic design
in the poster and excellent writing of the project report.
Best Student GIS Project for graduate students/GIS certificate students
• First place, generously sponsored by Wisconsin Land Information Association:
Liang Liang, PhD student from the Department of Geography, for his paper "Deriving and Assessing a Climate-calibrated Phenological Index With Digital Image Processing for the Conterminous US."• Second place, generously sponsored by the UWM School of Architecture & Urban Planning:
Kenny Aderungboye, GIS Certificate, Monique Hassman, Masters student from the Department of Anthropology, GIS Certificate, Sam Hildebrand, GIS Certificate, Rajeev Nanda, GIS Certificate, for their paper and poster "Johnsons Park Health Alliance Community Food Assessment."
Best Undergraduate Student GIS Project
• First place, generously sponsored by the UWM School of Architecture & Urban Planning:
Jason Schroeder, BS student from the Conservation and Environmental Science Program, for his paper and poster "Landscape change over 60 years surrounding Cedarburg Bog."

• Co-Third place: Vikas Lachhwani, Coordinate Master student of Urban Planning and Civil Engineering, and Eok Kim, Ph.D. student from Computer Science, for their project "GIS as a Tool for Facial recognition.

Second Place: Jill A. Hewitt, a graduate student from the Department of Geography, for her project "Development of Methods to Inventory And Assess Small Constructed Wetlands in Ozaukee County."
Third Place: Jun Luo, a graduate student from the Department of Geography, for his project "Milwaukee Property Sale Information: An Internet GIS Site for the Local Real Estate Market."
