SOFTWARE

All public Campus Computer Laboratories are running campus site licensed GIS software, including the current ESRI products.

A list of resources available to the UWM community to learn ArcGIS cab be found at http://www4.uwm.edu/gis/Learn_GIS.cfm

HARDWARE

Computer laboratories in multiple locations at UWM are available for GIS instruction and research:

American Geographical Society Library (Golda Meir Library)

AGSL maintains this information at http://www.uwm.edu/Libraries/AGSL/servrprdt.html

Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP)

SARUP maintains computer services information for that unit at http://www.uwm.edu/SARUP/computing/index.html.  That information may be more up to date than the information recorded below.

Four computer laboratories are available for student and faculty use in the Architecture and Urban Planning Building. Over 30 software applications are supported, including ArcGIS, ArcView, GeoMedia, MapInfo, AutoCAD, 3Dstudio Max, and others. World Wide Web home page development and Internet GIS development is available.

Biological Sciences (Lapham Hall)

Biological Sciences maintains computer services information for that unit at http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/Biology/Docs/computer.html

Cartography and Geographic Information Science Center (Bolton Hall)

Professional publication quality maps and graphics are compiled, designed, and produced in the laboratory's facilities per client specifications, using the latest desktop mapping and illustration software, technology, and equipment (PC and MAC). The laboratory also creates geographic and attribute files for analysis with Geographic Information Systems.

Services available include file translation to and from PC and Macintosh files; scanning, paper original or slides; digitizing; map design and layout; presentation slides; graphics from spreadsheets; color and black/white prints; GIS files.

Center for Advanced Spatial Information Research

This is a brand new Center!

The Center for Continuing Engineering Education - Hawthorn Engineering Lab (Center for Continuing Education)

Room 7410     21 650 Mhz Pentium II, 256M ram, 17" monitors, sound cards, internet access
Room 7430     17 450 Mhz Pentium II, 256M ram, 17" monitors, internet access
Room 7440     21 1Ghz Pentium III, 256M ram, 17" monitors, sound cards, internet access

Center for Urban Initiatives and Research (Engelmann Hall)

Seven Pentium PCs running Windows 3.1, eight 486 PCs, Microsoft Windows NT Server, Sun workstation, and DEC Alpha UNIX workstation on a peer to peer network. Software includes Atlas GIS and Maptitude. Digitizing tablet and color inkjet printers also accessible.

Engineering (EMS Building)

Approximately 200 PC networked workstations in student Computer Aided Design Labs, all have access to ArcView and CAICE, a GIS based Civil Engineering design package.

Information and Media Technologies (EMS Building)

The University's DEC Alpha-based computer network system is used to store the Milwaukee Property (MPROP) File of parcel records, the digital parcel base map from the City of Milwaukee, and the US Census Bureau's TIGER files. Access to this data is available through NSF (Network File System) by departmental workstations or through SPSS-X. Single PCs with MapInfo are available for casual use and demonstrations.

Institute for Survey and Policy Research (Bolton Hall)

Three computer labs are available to students in Bolton Hall (home to most social science departments):

Room 809 has two 386 PCs, four 486 PCs, and two Pentiums with two HP Laserjet Series II printers. Room 296 has 21 486 PCs, two HP Laserjet printers, and 10 KURTA digitizers. Room 293 has nine 486 PCs and twelve Pentiums with one HP Laserjet IIISi printer.
