Geographic Information Science (GIS) concepts and tools facilitate spatial reasoning and problem solving. For many of us, GIS is a practical technology that helps to improve our day-to-day lives. In recent years, GIS for everyday uses has become invisible and ubiquitous. Yet, GIS, when used as part of planning and decision support systems, offers much more capability and promise, a promise that has not yet been fully tapped.

In this presentation, I will discuss three themes:

• that spatial reasoning and problem solving is vital for civic engagement and democratic decision-making;
• that colleges and universities should expand the reach of GIS across disciplinary and departmental boundaries; and,
• that economic development trends indicate that GIS education holds great promise for students and aspiring GIS professionals, if we provide our students with the right mix of skills and expertise.

  RS2: Remodeling Map Milwaukee for the Contemporary Web User - an interactive feedback session, Alice Hagen, City of Milwaukee;
  
  RS3: ATC Aerial Patrols - Using Mobile GIS Applications from a Helicopter, Paul Schneider, ATC; American Transmission Company (ATC) provides electricity to most of Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. To ensure that all equipment is in sound condition, semi-annual inspections are done by a helicopter carrying a mobile GIS application.  This presentation will explain how ATC uses mobile GIS to maximize their efficiency in gathering and distributing aerial inspection information.

  RS5: Integrating County Parcel Data Using Web Services, Howard Veregin, Wisconsin State Cartographer, Brenda Hemstead, UW-Madison and Martin Goettl, UW-Eau Claire; How can individual county Web services be integrated into a single online map and used to support "virtual data integration" to streamline the process of multi-jurisdiction data integration efforts? This presentation focuses on some of the technical issues of a recently launched research project, including resymbolization of services from different counties, limitations on querying and analysis, performance issues, and integration of commercial and open source services.

  What is the value of GIS in education? Join Joseph Kerski as we discuss how, why, and in what context GIS can be used to teach business, biology, mathematics, earth science, geography, environmental science, history, and other subjects, and what the tipping points might be that spread spatial thinking beyond geography to general education.
  
  RS7: Historical Streams Analysis: a Joint Project by UWM and MMSD, Emily Champagne and Jay Feiker, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District;
  A joint project by MMSD and UWM to support the Integrated Regional Stormwater Management Program. The project goal was to use GIS to analyze the relationship between historical stream locations and areas currently impacted by flooding during rain events in Milwaukee. The Lincoln Creek subwatershed was selected as a study area due to its ongoing issues with flooding and residential basement backup occurrences during major rain events.
