Welcome Faculty, Staff, Students and Alumni to the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare Awards Website!

Every year, we honor outstanding Criminal Justice and Social Work faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members who exemplify the School's mission and standards of excellence. Your help is needed to nominate someone in recognition of his/her contribution! The deadline to submit a nomination is March 15, 2013. Any HBSSW faculty, staff, student or alumnus may nominate individuals in all categories. Click here for a list of last year's award honorees.

All award recipients will be honored at the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare Annual Awards Banquet on Friday, May 3, 2013. This event honors excellence and fosters a sense of shared commitment and camaraderie among current and former members of the school along with our generous donors and community partners.

Student Achievement Awards

Undergraduate Student Awards in Criminal Justice (2 awards)

  • $750 each —Awarded to two students majoring in Criminal Justice who has demonstrated excellence in the classroom and who has shown a commitment to promoting criminal justice through volunteer and/or field work in the community.
    Requirements: Must be a Junior or Senior with a 3.25 GPA or above.

Undergraduate Student Award in Social Work (2 awards)

  • $750 each—Awarded to two students majoring in Social Work who has demonstrated excellence in the classroom and who has shown a commitment to promoting social justice through volunteer and/or field work in the community.
    Requirements: Must be a Junior or Senior with a 3.25 GPA or above.

Graduate Student Award in Criminal Justice (1 award)

  • $1,000—Awarded to a Master’s student majoring in Criminal Justice who has demonstrated academic excellence. Other contributions to the school and to Criminal Justice in the community may also be considered.
    Requirements: Must have completed 12 credits of coursework and have a 3.5 GPA or above.

Graduate Student Award in Social Work (1 award)

  • $1,000—Awarded to a Master’s student in social work who has demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to service through volunteer and field activities.
    Requirements: Must have completed 12 credits of coursework and have a 3.5 GPA or above.

Faculty, Staff and Alumni Awards

Service Award (1 in Social Work / 1 in Criminal Justice)

  • Eligible nominees include all HBSSW faculty and staff (i.e., teaching and non-teaching academic staff, classified staff, faculty, and student assistants).  The award recognizes either school service (an individual who has made significant contributions to the development and operations of the school and/or university) or community service (an individual who has made significant contributions to the development, provision, and/or coordination of community services in the Milwaukee area).

Research Award (1 in Social Work / 1 in Criminal Justice)

  • Eligible nominees include all HBSSW faculty and staff, research scientists, graduate students, doctoral students, and post-doctoral students, and professors (assistant, associate, and full). Nominees are recognized for excellence in research and/or scholarship as demonstrated by a body of work that makes an exceptional contribution to the knowledge base of his/her chosen field of study.

Teaching Award (1 in Social Work / 1 in Criminal Justice)

  • Eligible nominees include all full-time faculty who provide direct instruction to undergraduate or graduate students. The award recognizes an individual for his/her excellence and innovation in teaching.

Adjunct Faculty Teaching Award (1 in Social Work /1 in Criminal Justice)

  • Eligible nominees include all adjunct instructors who provide direct instruction to undergraduate or graduate students. The award recognizes an individual for his/her excellence and innovation in teaching.

Non-Teaching Staff Award (1 award: Non-teaching support staff including classified and academic support staff)

  • Eligible nominees include all non-teaching support staff such as classified and academic support staff.  This award recognizes outstanding contributions by an individual who performs above and beyond the call of duty e.g., extraordinary workload over an extended period of time and/or temporarily assuming additional responsibilities having direct impact on and benefit to one's respective department and division.

Alumni Award (1 in Social Work / 1 in Criminal Justice)

  • Eligible nominees include all individuals who earned an undergraduate or graduate degree from HBSSW. The award recognizes an individual who has distinguished himself/herself through career accomplishments and/or civic involvement.

Community Awards

Agency Research Collaboration Award (1 in Social Work / 1 in Criminal Justice)

  • Eligible nominees include all community agencies which have collaborated with HBSSW researchers. The award recognizes a community agency for its outstanding contribution to the research endeavors of the HBSSW.

Community Member/Agency of the Year Award (1 in Social Work / 1 in Criminal Justice)

  • Eligible nominees include all community members or agencies that have made an outstanding contribution to the mission of the HBSSW or to the community at large.

Dean’s Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Award

Kindness is Contagious! Here's a way to thank someone who helped you out in a "special" way. Nominate him/her for the Dean's Random Act of Kindness Award (RAK). Any HBSSW faculty, staff, student or alum may nominate individuals and/or receive this award.
