Charles Schuster earned his doctorate from the University of Iowa in 1978 and has been a professor of English at UWM since 1985. He has served as associate dean for the Humanities (1999-2008), director of the English Composition Program, director of the Writing Center, and was the first director of the Edison Initiative (Freshman Scholars and Peer Mentoring). A former president of the Council of Writing Program Administrators (1994-96) and currently associate director of the Council’s Consultant Evaluator Service, he has given national lectures and workshops on the teaching of writing, cultural studies, the essay, writing across the curriculum, and first-year experience. College Editor of Heinemann-Boynton/Cook, which publishes professional books on the teaching of writing and literature, his own works include: Speculations (Co-Edited, Blair Press, 1992, 1996), Rhetorical Choices (Co-Edited, Longman, 2003, 2006), and Revelations (forthcoming, Heinemann-Boynton/Cook). His essays and reviews have appeared in College English, College Composition and Communication, Rhetoric Review, and numerous other scholarly journals and anthologies.
