Statement

The HPI continues to organize foreign study trips to Japan and Italy to supplement the academic and professional experience at home.  Students, as well as professionals, are encouraged to take advantage of 3 to 4 week programs focused on historic research, as well as contemporary problems.  Centered in Kyoto, Japan and San Gemini, Italy, the foreign study groups also visit the major urban centers and rural landmarks of Italy and Japan.  Contacts with foreign architects, builders, and universities provide an in depth behind the scenes experience not available for most foreign study trips.  The focus on historic preservation creates access to world renown landmarks, as well as generating information about restoration and adaptive reuse techniques that are useful here at home.
