Academic staff refers to professional and administrative personnel (other than faculty, classified staff, limited appointees, employees in training, and student assistants) with the duties and types of appointments primarily associated with colleges and universities or their administration.
Rules governing academic staff appointments are found in the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents (UWS) regulations of the Wisconsin Administrative Code. The Unclassified Personnel Guidelines (UPGs) are available on the UW System Administration web site at: http://www.uwsa.edu/hr/upgs/upg.htm.
Graduate assistants must be currently registered graduate students.
At UWM, graduate teaching assistants (TAs) and program and project assistants (PAs) are represented by a labor organization, the Milwaukee Graduate Assistants Association (MGAA). Graduate research assistants (RAs), undergraduate teaching or program/project assistants, fellows, scholars, and trainees are not covered by the agreement with the MGAA. Information on appointments is available from the Graduate School at: http://www.graduateschool.uwm.edu/faculty-staff/human-resources/ta-pa-policies/#Section0, which publishes annual appointment manuals for each category.
Student Employees are defined as unclassified hourly employees of the University of Wisconsin System, at least 16 years of age, who are registered or enrolled for credit and who provide part-time and/or temporary administrative, clerical, laborer, technical or other general support to administrators, faculty and staff.
VacationUnclassified staff members on an annual pay basis are entitled to 22 days of vacation per fiscal year of full time employment. Unclassified staff employed on an academic year (nine-month) basis are not eligible for vacation. Employees who have worked 10 complete fiscal years (July 1-June 30) may reserve up to five days (or 40 hours) of vacation each fiscal year in an Annual Leave Reserve Account (ALRA). Employees who have worked 25 complete Fiscal Years may reserve up to 80 hours of vacation each fiscal year in an Annual Leave Reserve Account (ALRA). Please note that because 10 and 25 full fiscal years must be completed to be eligible for ALRA, the option for these 40 and 80 hour reserves, respectively, will commence in either the 11th or 26th fiscal years, respectively. For more information on Unclassified leave, please contact your divisional Personnel Representative or see: http://www.uwsa.edu/hr/upgs/upg.htm, http://www.uwsa.edu/hr/upgs/upg09.pdf .
