CONSULTATIONS
Honolulu, Hawaii Architects: Design Partners Inc., Honolulu This day and short-term respite care center is designed to serve 12 day care clients and 12 additional overnight respite residents. Situated in a single-family housing area on a hill with a panoramic view of Honolulu, the size of the house and its form are typical of houses in its neighborhood, emphasizing the non-institutional character. Important Design Principles The simple plan provides direct visual access to most destinations while buffering the entry from the interior public space. The open plan and compact public space allow unobtrusive surveillance from the kitchen or other activity points to almost all public parts of the building. The provision of a familiar kitchen and dining room space emphasizes the basically domestic nature of the facility. Although essentially without corridors, the compact organization of the plan provides a coherent wandering path.. A lanai, screened intimate back porch, encourages social interaction.
