Welcome to Service Learning!
Service Learning is one of UWMs quiet
success stories. Since its debut in 1999, the Institute for
Service Learning and its many faculty partners have brought
nearly 5,000 students off the campus and into the community
for service experiences that enrich academics, build critical
thinking skills and foster a sense of civic responsibility.
Service learning connects students with the real world side
of their coursework, bringing social and cultural issues into
focus and providing significant benefits to the more than
205 local nonprofit organizations which host UWM students.
UWM faculty offer students a service learning
option in more than 20 courses representing disciplines ranging
from the humanities to the health sciences. Depending on the
course, students commit to 10-15 hours of service at an area
nonprofit or complete a service learning project.
The UWM Institute for Service Learning
(ISL) is available to answer your questions about service
learning and help you with all aspects of developing a service
learning course, including design, implementation and evaluation.
We will work with you to identify community placements that
are relevant to your course, arrange special site visits,
handle service learning registration and provide student follow-up
throughout the semester. We can also offer you access to sample
syllabi and current literature on service learning issues,
trends, and research.
