Expectations

The Institute for Service Learning and the community placement site expect students to:

  • Accurately and dependably fulfill committed hours and complete projects.
  • Respect and abide by the policies of the site, including those on confidentiality and orientation or training.
  • Own your learning. Speak up if you have concerns about your experience, including questions about whether or not it’s a good fit with your course.
  • Stay current with time sheets and other forms.
  • Behave professionally and comply with established dress codes.
  • Provide a minimum of 24 hours advance notice of absence.
  • Notify your instructor/professor and the UWM Institute for Service Learning if the site supervisor terminates the placement.

You can expect our community partners to:

  • Provide meaningful work related to course content.
  • Offer an orientation or training for the position.
  • Share as much information as possible about the organization including, policies, clients, programs and activities.
  • Offer sound guidance and input.
  • Encourage respect from fellow workers.
  • Give students a chance to make suggestions and receive feedback.

You can expect the Institute for Service Learning to:

  • Offer a basic orientation to service learning and its requirements
  • Provide support in selecting a service learning placement
  • Assist in developing service learning objectives
  • Help with difficulties encountered at service sites
  • Act as a liaison to your instructor
  • Furnish opportunities to receive feedback and evaluate your experience at the end of the semester.
