Welcome to Service Learning!
Service learning is an academic program which gives students a chance to take part in organized community service. Through their work, students gain a deeper understanding of course content and a greater awareness of community of needs.
Whether tutoring young children, mentoring teens, assisting older adults or working in agencies that grapple with such complex issues as hunger, homelessness, or environmental preservation, the opportunities for real-world, experience are as diverse as they are rewarding. Those experiences are made even more meaningful through classroom discussion and reflection.
UWM faculty offer students a service learning option in more than 20 courses representing disciplines ranging from the humanities to health sciences. Depending on the course, students are required to do between 12-15 hours of service at a Milwaukee area nonprofit organization or complete a project. Recent service learning projects include creation of advertising and marketing campaigns, development of web-based education programs and grant writing. More than 100 community agencies partner with the Institute for Service Learning every semester so that students are assured of a placement and service experience related to course content.
