Welcome Professor Joel Berkowitz!
After an international search, the UWM Sam & Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies announces the appointment of a new director, Professor Joel Berkowitz, of the State University of New York, Albany. Berkowitz will join the faculty of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, as well as direct the Center for Jewish Studies, beginning in August. Professor Berkowitz, served several years as Chair of the Department of Judaic Studies and Director of the Center for Jewish Studies at the State University of New York, Albany. He is a scholar of the history of Yiddish theate and modern Jewish cultural studies. Before his tenure at SUNY Albany, Berkowitz served as Lecturer and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford in England. He was also a Fulbright Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Professor Lisa Silverman has been awarded a UWM Faculty Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award
Professor Silverman will be recognized at an awards ceremony on October 4, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Congratulations Lisa!
Dr. Rachel Baum is awarded support from UW System for CJS projects
A pilot project funded by the UW System on the use of social media in the classroom, Dr. Baum will be using Faceook and Twitter in online and face-to-face courses to see if the social media improves students' experiences in the courses.
The 2010-2011 Collaborative Interdisciplinary Learning Outcomes Project, organized by the Center for Instructional and Professional Development, is a working group of faculty and teaching academic staff which will be articulating essential learning outcomes for their general education courses and integrating them into their course curricula.
