American Indian Studies Major

The American Indian Studies Committee Interdisciplinary Major requires a minimum of 30 credits, of which at least 15 must be in upper-division Letters and Science courses (numbered 300 or above) taken in residence at UWM. It must include course work in at least two departments. Courses from any two or more departments within the College of Letters and Science may be selected for the major program. Courses from most units outside the College also may be selected for part of the major. However, at least 18 credits in the major must be earned in Letters and Science courses, and at least 90 Letters and Science credits must be presented toward the degree.

Students select three faculty members from two or more departments to comprise a major committee. One of these persons serves as committee chair and major advisor. The chair and one other committee member must be Letters and Science faculty members. Students need to complete a "Declaration of Committee Interdisciplinary Major" form signed by each committee member. The form and a written statement defining the goals of their program should be returned to the Office of Student Academic Services at any time between the 45th and 75th credits.
