Growth Chamber Facilities
The Department maintains two large modern greenhouses and several controlled environmental chambers for plant research and teaching. The campus greenhouse is divided into four rooms that have supplemental HID lighting, CO2 enrichment, and independent temperature controls. A second greenhouse at the Great Lakes Research Facility houses faculty research projects and most of the Department's teaching collection of more than 600 species of plants, which includes specimens for demonstrating plant evolution and adaptation. The greenhouse maintains a collection of native plants which is supplemented by 270 tree and shrub species planted throughout the campus. An 11-acre conservancy area on campus is also available for study. Lapham Hall also houses 23 plant growth, insect, environmental or cold chambers for research and instructional use.
