Electron Microscopy Laboratory
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry enjoys access to a modern electron microscopy facility in the Department of Biological Sciences, mere steps away in Lapham Hall. The state-of-the-art facility is available for use by graduate students, faculty, and staff. It is equipped with an Hitachi S4800 scanning electron microscope and an Hitachi H600 transmission electron microscope, which may also be operated in scanning-tunneling microscope (STM) mode. Both microscopes are equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) systems for elemental analysis. A full suite of support equipment, including ultramicrotomes, critical point dryers, vacuum evaporators, sputter coaters, and fully-equipped darkrooms are also available for use. Formal courses in scanning and transmission electron microscopy provide training to both graduate and undergraduate students.
