The Department of English at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee offers programs emphasizing outstanding research scholarship and innovative pedagogy in a wide range of areas. Formal degree concentrations include Literary Studies, Rhetoric and Composition, Creative Writing, Professional Writing, and Modern Studies (including Film). Historically the Department has been associated with new developments in literary theory and cultural studies, supporting interdisciplinary scholarship in collaboration with UWM's Center for 21st Century Studies. The faculty is large and diverse, including African American, Native American, Hispanic/Latino, and South Asian tenure-line appointees.

The undergraduate and graduate courses we offer have as their common ground the English language, its effective use as a means of written communication, and the literature it has generated over many centuries and in many geographical areas. To this end, the department recognizes and will continue to respond to the international and cross-cultural importance of the English language, both as a means of communication in world affairs and as the literary voice of diverse peoples. The emergence of digital culture is transforming these traditional commitments, enriching the possibilities for scholarship and teaching, developments supported by campus initiatives and individual faculty projects.
