Foreign Languages and Literature
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature provides instruction in sixteen different languages, many of which are not taught anywhere else in Wisconsin. Besides language instruction, we also offer a broad array of courses on the cultural and literary history of Ancient Greece and Rome, Germany, Israel and the Jewish diaspora, Russia, Japan, China, Poland, and Scandinavia, along with courses on the Bible, the Holocaust, literary theory, and film.
Our faculty, staff, and students produce scholarship in cultural and literary history, literary theory, language pedagogy, linguistics, archeology, digital humanities, and area studies, as well as scholarly and literary translations.
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature is home to degree programs in Classics, German, Hebrew Studies, Chinese and Russian. We are also a core department for interdisciplinary certificate programs in Ancient Mediterranean Studies, Scandinavian Studies, Russian and East European Studies, Asian Studies, Middle Eastern and North African Studies, German Studies, and Great Books."
