Course Description:

In this course, economic development of East Asian countries (China, Japan, and Korea) will be studied from a comprehensive interdisciplinary point of view. Brief history, geography, politics, culture, and language will be discussed as well as spectacular modern economic growths of recent years. Current events particularly pertinent to economics and business of those countries will also be discussed. It will be an ideal course for those who are interested in learning more about those countries but find them rather exotic and hard to understand.

About the Instructor:

Professor Sunwoong Kim, originally from South Korea, is a Professor of Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is a specialist in urban economics. He is also interested in political economy and development, particularly in East Asian countries of China, Korea, and Japan. He obtained Ph.D. in Economics and Urban Planning from MIT (1985), Master of City and Regional Planning from Harvard (1980), and Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Environmental Planning from Seoul National University (1976, 1978). He has published articles in well known professional journals including American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, The Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Urban Economics, Journal of Regional Science, Regional Science and Urban Economics, Journal of Housing Economics, Journal of Housing Research, and Social Science Quarterly.
