'This Sucks...': Controversies in Public Art

- Place: Hybrid Course. This course will meet twice in the semester; once on Friday of the first week and once on Friday of the last week in Holton Hall, Rm 241. This format gives you a flexible schedule, but also requires time management skills and high speed internet access.
Course Description:
From Diego Rivera to graffiti abatement, from the Vietnam Memorial to the online Iraq Veterans Memorial, from Tilted Arc to the Bronze Fonz, from tattoo licensing to Facebook; this course surveys controversies instigated by public art as a democratic ideal. As part of the course, you will investigate public art in your community and create art projects for the public. Work Involved:
Through reading articles, watching videos, sharing ideas, and developing projects, we will explore public art, its history in the United States, and the way in which it interacts with contemporary society.Links

About the Instructor:
Amy Mangrich received Master of Art and Master of Fine Art degrees in Visual Art. Her work focuses on installation in the public sphere. In addition to research and teaching about public art, Amy is also the co-founder of IN:SITE, an organization that promotes temporary public art in Milwaukee through bi-annual exhibitions.
