UW-Milwaukee: Department of History

Welcome to the Department of History at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee.

The Department's faculty and academic staff pursue research and teaching interests that span the globe. Strongly committed to interdisciplinary approaches in historical research and pedagogy, the Department also collaborates with a wide range of academic programs and centers here at UWM and at other universities in the US and abroad.

At the graduate level, we are one of only two History Departments in the University of Wisconsin System (along with UW-Madison) to offer both the M.A. and the Ph.D. Our M.A. program allows students to pursue a general degree in History or to specialize in Public History, or Urban Historical Studies, or to do a Coordinated MA/MLIS in both History and Library/Information Science (in collaboration with UWM's School of Information Studies). In our Ph.D. program, students concentrate in one of three areas: Global History, Modern Studies, or Urban History.

Among undergraduates, History has long been a popular major in the College of Letters and Science, and the Department also serves large numbers of undergraduates in all schools and colleges at UWM through General Education courses.

For more information, please browse the site or contact the Department: (414) 229-4361or history@uwm.edu.
