Declaring a Major or Minor in History

Declaring a Major in History

The declaration of the major involves two steps:

  1. Read the requirements for a History major: It is important that you become acquainted with the necessary requirements to graduate with the History major. These requirements cannot be waived.
  2. Send an email message to the Co-Director of Undergraduate Studies, Professor Lisa Silverman, silverld@uwm.edu. Include in your email message 1) your full name, complete mailing address, home phone number, and your student ID number; 2) one of the following statements:
    • I hereby declare a major in History
    • I am majoring in [subject], but I hereby change my major to History
    • I am majoring in [subject], and I hereby declare History as a second major;
    and, if you are not already in the College of Letters and Science, 3) one of the following statements:
    • I hereby switch from [school or college] to the College of Letters and Science
    • I will remain in [school or college], as History will not be my primary major
    Note that students may double major in History and Broad Field Social Studies Education-History, provided that the School of Education is their primary school.

If you are switching from a History minor to a History major, please indicate as much in your email message, as well.

Professor Silverman will submit a declaration form on your behalf to L&S Student Academic Services, and you will receive an email message from her confirming as much. Within two months (and usually much sooner than that) your records on PAWS will reflect your declaration.
