Pre-2008 JAMS Requirements

Completing the JAMS Major Under Requirements in Effect Prior to Fall 2008

  1. Successfully complete at least 36 credits in Journalism, Advertising and Media Studies (including JAMS 101 and 201) with a grade point average of at least 2.5 in JAMS courses.
  2. Pass the senior seminar, JAMS 661 (Seminar in Media Communication and Society).
  3. Pass JAMS 559 (Law of Mass Communication).
  4. Pass at least 18 credits in JAMS courses numbered 300 or above (including JAMS 559 and 661).
  5. Pass at least 12 credits numbered 300 or above in a single department, certificate, or program other than JAMS.
  6. Complete the requirements of at least one of the following four submajors:
    1. Print Journalism

      Students who have passed JAMS 203 (News Writing and Reporting) must also pass JAMS 500 (Advanced Reporting).

      Students who not yet taken JAMS 203 (News Reporting and Writing) must pass both JAMS 204 (Integrated Reporting) and JAMS 500 (Advanced Reporting).

    2. Broadcast Journalism

      Students who have passed JAMS 242 (Radio News Reporting) must also pass JAMS 342 (TV News Reporting).

      Students who have not yet taken JAMS 242 (Radio News Reporting) must pass both JAMS 204 (Integrated Reporting) and JAMS 342 (TV News Reporting).

    3. Advertising/Public Relations

      Students who have passed JAMS 222 (Advertising Principles and Practices) or JAMS 224 (Principles of Public Relations) must also pass JAMS 524 (Strategic Communication Campaigns).

      Students who have not yet taken JAMS 222 (Advertising Principles and Practices) or JAMS 224 (Principles of Public Relations) must pass both JAMS 207 (Introduction to Strategic Communication) and JAMS 524 (Strategic Communication Campaigns).

    4. Media Studies

      Student who have passed JAMS 262 (Principles of Media Studies) must also pass JAMS 562 (Media Studies and Culture).

      Students who not yet taken JAMS 262 (Principles of Media Studies) must pass both JAMS 262 (Principles of Media Studies) and JAMS 562 (Media Studies and Culture).Completing the JAMS Minor Under Requirements in Effect Prior to Fall 2008

Completing the JAMS Minor Under Requirements in Effect Prior to Fall 2008

To complete the JAMS minor, students must earn at least 18 credits in JAMS courses. Nine of the credits must be in JAMS 101, JAMS 201, and JAMS 661. At least 6 of the other credits must be earned in courses numbered 300 or above. Students must achieve a grade point average of at least 2.5 in JAMS courses.
