JAMS Major and Minor Requirements

Note: Students who declared the major or minor before August 23, 2008 may use previous requirements. Students who entered the UW System prior to Fall 2008 may use previous requirements if they declare(d) their major within five years of the date of entry.

Requirements for Completing the JAMS Major

  1. Successfully complete at least 39 credits--including both JAMS 101: Introduction to Mass Media and JAMS 201: Media Writing-with a grade point average of at least 2.5 in JAMS courses.
  2. Pass the senior seminar, JAMS 661: Seminar in Media Communication and Society.
  3. Pass JAMS 559: Law of Mass Communication.
  4. Pass at least 24 credits in JAMS courses numbered 300 or above (including JAMS 559 and 661).
  5. Complete the requirements of one of the following three concentrations:
    1. Advertising and Public Relations
      JAMS 207: Introduction to Advertising and Public Relations
      JAMS 307: Advertising and Public Relations Writing and Production
      JAMS 505: Research for Advertising and Public Relations
      JAMS 524: Advertising and Public Relations Campaigns
    2. Journalism/Documentary Concentration
      Semester 1:
      • JAMS 204 News Writing and Technology (required)
      Semester 2:
      • JAMS 320 Integrated Reporting for Journalism and Documentary (required; 204 prereq)
      • JAMS 332 Introduction to Digital Documentary (optional – 204 or 307 prereq)
      Semester 3 (choose at least one of the following):
      • JAMS 332 Introduction to Digital Documentary (204 prereq)
      • JAMS 342 Television News Reporting (320 prereq)
      • JAMS 500 Advanced Reporting (320 prereq)
      Semester 4 (choose at least one of the following):
      • JAMS 532 Documentary Production (332 prereq)
      • JAMS 544 Television Newsroom Management (342 prereq)
      • JAMS 602 Specialized Reporting (500, 332 or 342 prereq)
      • JAMS 604 Advanced Integrated Reporting for Journalism and Documentary
    3. Media Studies Concentration
      JAMS 262: Principles of Media Studies
      JAMS 562: Media Studies and Culture

      And one course in each of the following two areas:

      Media Production Elective (at least one of the following):
      • JAMS 204: News Writing and Technology
      • JAMS 231: Publication Design
      • JAMS 232: Photojournalism
      • JAMS 306: Feature and Magazine Writing
      • JAMS 307: Advertising and Public Relations Writing and Production
      • JAMS 336: Media Graphics
      • JAMS 504: Critical and Opinion Writing
      • JAMS 602: Specialized Reporting

      Media Studies Elective (at least one of the following):
      • JAMS 356: Media Literacy
      • JAMS 360: History of Mass Media
      • JAMS 361: Media Ethics
      • JAMS 450: Race, Ethnicity and Media
      • JAMS 614: Mass Media and Public Opinion
      • JAMS 615: Mass Media and Politics
      • JAMS 620: Global Media Systems
      • JAMS 645: Health and the Media
      • JAMS 659: Comparative Media Law

    Students who complete the JAMS major (and fulfill requirements of the College of Letters and Science) will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism, Advertising, and Media Studies.

    Requirements for Completing the JAMS Minor

    To complete the JAMS minor, students must earn at least 18 credits in JAMS courses (including JAMS 101: Introduction to Mass Media and JAMS 201: Media Writing). At least 9 of the credits must be earned in courses numbered 300 or above. Students must achieve a grade point average of at least 2.5 in JAMS courses.
