Internships

What is an Internship?
A supervised work experience, given academic credit, an internship experience is available to graduate students in M.P.A., Urban Affairs, and MILR programs. The internship provides an opportunity for learning and professional growth whereby students can test their skills and attitudes developed in their academic programs, and contribute as a skilled and enthusiastic participant in the organization.

Where do Interns Work?
Public agencies at all levels of government: federal, state, local non-profit and private sector organizations and corporations. International placements are also available.

When can I do an Internship?
Internship opportunities are available throughout the year, although many students prefer summer placement (June through August). M.P.A. students may receive up to 3 credits for one semester internships, while Urban Affairs and MILR students may get credit for up to two semesters or a total of 6 credits. Many students choose to extend their placement, and work without credit after the semester is over. Interns are required to work a minimum of 150 hours per semester for 3 credits.

Will I get Paid?
Employers are actively encouraged to provide a stipend or salary for student interns. Paid internships have ranged from $5.00 to $10.00 an hour, but have also included tuition reimbursement, consultant fees, or other similar arrangements. In some cases, despite our best efforts, a potential employer will be unable to provide any monetary compensation, but can provide an outstanding experience for a student. It is strongly recommended that students consider the value of the experience in terms of enhancing future education and employment plans in deciding which options to pursue.

How do I get an Internship?
In order to provide the greatest range of placement opportunities, students should allow for sufficient lead time. Normally, students should contact the Internship Coordinator (Dennis Hatch, Bolton 668E, 414-229-6810) as soon as possible prior to the semester in which they intend to serve an internship.
