Graduate Application Information

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is one of the two centers of doctoral study in the University of Wisconsin System. The campus, which has an enrollment of more than 26,000 students, is located in the North Shore area of Milwaukee near Lake Michigan.

The department offers as its only doctoral level degree the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), with programs in clinical and experimental psychology. Students are admitted to the doctoral program with the expectation that they will earn the Ph.D. Both the clinical and the experimental programs emphasize basic training in psychology and the development of research competence. Professional skills in clinical psychology are acquired through practica and applied courses.

The graduate program offers the opportunity for specialization and research training—basic and applied—in the areas of learning/behavior analysis, perception, cognition, behavioral neuroscience, social psychology/health psychology, life span psychology, and clinical psychology.

The department has well-equipped laboratories and a psychological training clinic on campus. The City of Milwaukee provides additional opportunities for applied research and clinical training in such facilities as hospitals, social service agencies, local schools, the Milwaukee County Museum, and the Medical College of Wisconsin.

In the application you may indicate whom you would like to serve as your major professor. We will try to honor your request, although we cannot guarantee that you will be assigned a permanent major professor on admittance. If you are admitted without a major professor, you will be assigned a temporary adviser, and given one academic year to find a major professor and establish a graduate committee.

With regard to the clinical program, most students choose clinical faculty as sponsors; however, some students combine study and research in a non-clinical specialty with the clinical program and, therefore, choose a major professor from the experimental faculty.

Because students work in close association with individual faculty members, the student-major professor ratio is about 5:1. Given this ratio, the department has room for a total of 60-80 graduate students, with about 10 new students admitted each year. Some entering and continuing students are supported with teaching or research assistantships. Entering students who qualify for special consideration should apply for The Graduate School's Advanced Opportunity Fellowships. The Graduate School awards other forms of fellowship support for continuing students.

Additional information about graduate study at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is contained within the Graduate School Bulletin which is available upon request from The Graduate School. The Bulletin may be available on microfiche at your local university library.
