Community History Institute

Polish flat in Milwaukee At the heart of the Public History Program is the Community History Institute. Designed to function as the extension or "service" arm of the Public History Program, the Institute is a vehicle for a variety of cooperative community history projects. It forms another important link between the academic and community realms of public history. It also improves our ability to prepare students for careers in public history by expanding opportunities for internships and employment.

The Community History Institute has three components:
  • Local History Laboratory that sponsors research on Milwaukee area history and assists community groups with their own local history projects.

  • Contract Research Service that for fees prepares and publishes local studies, constructs exhibits, and develops nominations for the National Trust of Historic Places.

  • Oral History Program that conducts local projects with community groups.
