New Directions Scholarship for Freshman – 2010-2011

Description:

This scholarship provides $2,000 in financial support for exceptional first-year students who enroll in a degree program in the College of Letters and Science and who must successfully complete 12 L&S credits in each semester of the 2010-11 academic year. (See www.uwm.edu/letsci/majors.html for a complete list of our undergraduate majors that can be chosen for an L&S B.A. or B.S. degree.)

Criteria:

The L&S Scholarship Committee will consider the following factors in reviewing applications and awarding scholarships. Strength in one area can offset a weakness in another area in the judges' evaluation process, but the ideal New Directions Scholarship recipient:

  • has a high school GPA of at least 3.5 on a scale of 4.0 or equivalent (please enclose your transcript)
  • has a class rank in the 90th percentile or above (if applicable for your high school)
  • has a composite ACT score of 29 or higher (or a combined SAT score of 1,300 or higher)
  • participates in relevant extracurricular activities and has won academic awards while in high school
  • provides a properly crafted written statement articulating his or her academic and career goals

If you meet a majority of these criteria, we invite you to apply for a New Directions Scholarship for Freshmen. Please choose the appropriate Application format (Word, RTF, PDF), complete it and send it to us by U.S. Mail.

Deadline:

April 1, 2010, though we will begin awarding scholarship to outstanding applicants starting December 1, 2009.

Notification:

Successful applicants will receive a letter by U.S. Mail containing an Acceptance Form that must be returned by a specified deadline. (Approximately Aug. 25, 2010, you will need to accept the financial award in your PAWS account.)

Renewability:

New Directions scholarships are renewable for a maximum of three additional years as $1,000 New Directions-Next Generation scholarships. (A separate application is required each year).
