New Directions Scholarship Program

The New Directions scholarship provides $3,500 for four exceptional first-year students enrolled in an undergraduate degree program within the College of Letters and Science (L&S). If the student meets the criteria for renewal, this scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years for a total package value of $14,000. This scholarship is funded by generous donations from alumni as well as faculty and staff from Letters & Science.

The application process for this scholarship is by invitation only. Since this award represents the absolute best and brightest, students who will be invited to apply will generally have a high school GPA of 3.75 or higher, a class rank in the top 5% of their class, and an ACT of 29 or higher. Invitations will be extended between November 1, 2012 and February 10, 2013.

Students who are invited to apply will be asked to submit an essay on a specific topic or topics and will need to demonstrate a strong history of extracurricular activities and academic and personal achievement awards. Application materials will be due by February 28, 2013, and the announcement of scholarship winners will take place on or around March 15, 2013.

One scholarship recipient will be selected from each of our three areas: Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. The fourth recipient can come from any of the three areas.

The award will be paid over two semesters, in late August and in mid-January through your PAWS account.
