About the College of Letters and Science

New Student Orientation at UW-Milwaukee

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is comprised of several Schools and Colleges that administer a variety of academic programs and majors. The College of Letters and Science (L&S) has 22 academic departments representing most of the liberal arts fields, including the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.

If you are entering L&S as a freshman you are probably:

  • planning to pursue one of the College's many majors, or
  • interested in one of the College's pre-professional programs (i.e. pre-med, pre-law), or
  • unsure of your major and interested in exploring the many options available at UWM.

If you fit into the third category, you are not alone! Most freshmen enter college without having decided upon a major. Being "open-minded" actually can enrich your educational experience. You will probably be more likely to try a broad range of courses as you explore a variety of majors and careers, and open yourself to innovative programs like the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) program.
