Admissions Process

Applicants to the Certificate Program must have completed a baccalaureate degree with a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75 and must submit the following materials with their graduate school application:

• Two letters of recommendation - We especially welcome letters from instructors and current and past employers.
• A writing sample - We welcome samples from work, school, volunteer projects, and other venues where you have done excellent writing. We also welcome documentation that you created from scratch just for this application. We want to see that you are a clear and effective communicator.
• A statement of purpose - We are most interested in hearing about your history and background, career interests and goals, and how you see our program contributing to those goals.

Students seeking admission to the Certificate and graduate degree programs are advised to contact the Graduate Coordinator for Professional Writing, Rachel Spilka, at spilka@uwm.edu.

When to apply?
You can apply at any time. The Certificate Committee will review application files within several weeks of their completion.

Where to apply?
As a student earning the Graduate Certificate in Professional Writing and Communication, you apply to the Graduate School as a "Non-Degree Graduate Student."
