All Applicants

While the admissions process is different for the 24-credit Graduate Certificate Program in Translation and the 30-credit MA with a Concentration in Translation, both programs require satisfactory performance on the Translation Program Qualifying Exam.

The exam is two-part: 1) is a 250-300 word text to translate from the candidate's second language into the native language with the help of dictionaries; 2) is a 150-word essay to be written in the candidate's target language (usually the native language). Candidates are given 2 hours to complete the exam.

Our Fall 2009 exam dates are:

  • Saturday, December 12, 10:00am-12:00pm
    Curtin Hall, Room 175
  • Wednesday, December 16, 5:30-7:30pm
    Location to be announced

To register for the exam, please e-mail Kate Scholz at kscholz@uwm.edu, with the following information:

  • Your full name
  • Your preferred email address
  • Your language pair
  • Your preferred date for the exam

Please note that if you do not include all the information listed above, we will not be able to register you for the exam. You must indicate your language pair (the language you are translating from and the language you are translating to) for us to properly prepare exam materials. We need your e-mail address so we can contact you when a room assignment has been confirmed.

Exams are offered three times a year (Spring, Summer, Winter). Students are encouraged to take the exam before entering the translation program. If students should fail the exam they are allowed to retake it once, after completing the Introduction to Translation class in their corresponding language pair. If after completing the Introduction to Translation class, students are still unable to pass the entrance exam, then they are not allowed to retake the exam. Exam results are not contestable and are valid for two years.

A.   Graduate Certificate in Translation

  • Applicants must be graduates of an accredited college or university; a degree in the foreign language of concentration, or advanced study in that area, is desirable, as is study or experience in a field in which there is translation work available.

  • Applicants must have earned a GPA of 2.75 or higher in undergraduate work or must secure the consent of the Translation Program Coordinator.
  • Applicants should have basic computer skills (proficiency in MS Office)
When to Apply?

You can apply at any time.

Where to apply?

Students earning the Graduate Certificate in Translation may earn 12 of the 24 required credits paying undergraduate rates as a "University Special Student." If the first course or courses in which you enroll is or are U/G courses (courses carrying both Undergraduate and Graduate credit), apply to Adult and Returning Student Services. If the first course or one of the first courses in which you enroll is a G course (Graduate credit only), apply to the Graduate School as a Non-Degree Graduate Student.

Students exercising this money-saving option must register as "Non-Degree Graduate Students" for any semester in which they are taking a G course.

Important: Credits earned as a "University Special Student" cannot be applied toward an MA. Students considering applying non-degree credits toward an MA should apply to the Graduate School as "Non-Degree Graduate Students." For further clarification, consult the Coordinator of the Translation Program.

B.   MA with an emphasis in Translation

  • Applicants must be graduates of an accredited college or university; a degree in the foreign language of concentration or advanced study in that area, is desirable, as is study or experience in a field in which there is translation work available.

  • Applicants must have earned a GPA of 2.75 or higher in undergraduate work.

  • The program requires three letters of recommendation, to be sent to the Coordinator of the MAFLL Program. At least two of these letters should be from instructors who can speak to your ability to do graduate work.

  • Apply to the Graduate School for study in the MAFLL Program.

  • The MAFLL Program requires the submission of a well-developed statement of purpose of at least 500 words outlining your academic background and interests, reasons for graduate study in the MAFLL program, intended concentration and professional goals. This statement will serve as your writing sample.

  • Applicants should have basic computer skills (proficiency in MS Office)

  • International Students apply to the Center for International Education.

When to apply?
If you wish to begin in the fall or spring semester of the year, MAFLL encourages you to follow the application deadlines recommended by the Graduate School and, for International Students, the Center for International Eduction. Your application will be processed as soon as all required materials have been received.

If you apply too late for a given semester, you may take up to four courses (12 credits) as a Non-Degree Graduate Student and transfer these credits toward the degree after being admitted to the MAFLL Program. Students wishing this option should consult with the Translation Program Coordinator.
