ATA-Certified Translators!

Sue (Strugalla) Couture became ATA-certified for Spanish to English translation in January 2008. Sue took some translation and interpreting classes while at UWM and now is a full-time staff medical interpreter, a part-time freelance translator, and part-time ad hoc instructor of medical interpreting program at WCTC. Sue is also secretary of the Midwest Association of Translators and Interpreters and Editor of the quarterly newsletter inforMATIon.

Elisabeth Lyman (2004) became ATA-certified for French to English translation in 2007. In addition to her full-time freelancing work for clients in France, Switzerland, Belgium and the US, Elisabeth teaches a course in NYU's Continuing and Professional Studies online translation program. Since the summer of 2007 she has also been editor-in-chief of À Propos, the quarterly newsletter of the ATA's French Language Division.

Kelley Dawson Salas, studying translation and interpreting at UWM, also became ATA-certified for Spanish to English translation. Kelley is on leave from her fourth grade bilingual teaching position at La Escuela Fratney (MPS). While on leave she translates as a freelancer and is completing an internship as Language Service Specialist at Columbia St. Mary's. In her spare time, Kelley is an editor of Rethinking Schools magazine.

Steven Hackbarth (MAFLL Spanish/Comparative Literature), became ATA certified for Spanish to English translation. Steve took some translation classes while at UWM, and is now in his second year of doctoral coursework in English at Marquette.

Current Students

Sarah Tapia (Spanish to English track) has passed the Wisconsin State Court Interpreter Certification exam. Congratulations, Sarah!

Yvonne Puerner ((Spanish to English track) has been working as a pool Medical Interpreter/Cultural Companion at St. Francis Hospital in Milwaukee. She works on breast health education for Latina Women through Susan G. Komen and Avon Grants.

Andrés Aluma (English to Spanish track) received a UWM Center for Latin American Studies graduate travel grant to complete field work pertaining to his thesis in Washington D.C. in Spring 2008.

Alumni

Alexis Pollitz (2008) has accepted a position as Linguistic Validation Project Manager at Corporate Translations, based in Connecticut with a small office Chicago. Congratulations, Alexis!

Anukware Selase Adzima (2007) will begin doctoral studies in Translation at State University of New York at Binghamton in Fall 2008.

Bethany Welch (2007) is a bilingual paraprofessional with the Marinette WI School District. She also freelance translates (Spanish and German to English) and interprets (Spanish), and performs language reviews for Iverson Language Associates. She hopes to add teaching Spanish at the undergraduate level starting in Fall 2008.

Dave Summers (2006) left ASET International Services to continue his studies in Translation at the PhD level at Kent State University. He is in his second year at Kent, learning PHP and working on various research topics. Dave will be presenting at the ATA Conference in November 2008.

Tamesia Sosa (2003) recently accepted a full-time instructor of Language Interpreting for Health Services position at Madison Area Technical College to begin in Spring 2008. She will be teaching interpreting and translation with a medical emphasis and will work with the program coordinator to further develop the program. Congratulations, Tamesia!

Iverson Language continues to be a destination point for our current students as interns, and then some later as full time employees. Hélène Pielmeier (1999) is Director of Client Services; David Santori (2002) is Manager of the Project Management Group; Amy Allen (2004) is Senior Project Manager and Caitlin Ackley (2006) is Project Manager. Iverson also employs 4 alumni as Quality Reviewers: Aurora Sambolín (2006), Bethany Welch (2007), Michael Kavalar (2006) and Therese Holzem.

SWITS, a language service provider located in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois, is another internship sponsor for our Progran. In addition, SWITS offers interpreter training workshops throughout Wisconsin. The SWITS Scholarship is applicable to the workshop cost, and available to students enrolled in a Wisconsin college-level translation or interpreting program. Two Translation Program students were recipients of the scholarship (Ann Borre - 2006; Micah McKay - 2006). For more information, visit www.swits.us.
