UWM Authors to Speak on Works Addressing Race in America

MILWAUKEE - Two urban studies professors will talk about their new books on race relations on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at Harry W. Schwartz Books, 2559 N. Downer Ave.

Robert O. Self, UWM assistant professor of history is author of "American Babylon: Race and the Struggle for Postwar Oakland" (Princeton University Press) and Kent Redding, assistant professor of sociology, is author of "Making Race, Making Power" (University of Illinois Press).

Self's book examines the aftermath of urban renewal in U.S. cities and the politics of race and class. He gives special focus on urban transformation and the conflict between civil rights and tax revolt politics in California after World War II.

At the same time, it addresses an aspect often ignored in discussions on race: that concerns of people living in cities are often directly related to the over-development of their surroundings.

Redding explores the national effects of exclusionary political organizing in 19th century South. "Making Race, Making Power: North Carolina's Road to Disfranchisement" centers on the interplay between political manipulation by the ruling class and innovative mobilizing strategies adopted in response by marginalized groups to combat disfranchisement.
